Helping a Science Nonprofit Meet Creators Where They Are
When a science nonprofit set out to support digital creators, we ran the research that pointed to a smarter, more sustainable way in.

SciLine is a service of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the world's largest general scientific society and publisher of the journal Science. SciLine connects journalists and science communicators with credible experts and fact-based resources, work that sits at a critical point in the information ecosystem: helping accurate science reach the public at a moment when trust in institutions is fragile and misinformation moves fast.
But the ecosystem SciLine serves is shifting. Traditional newsroom gatekeepers have given way to independent creators who reach large audiences directly on social platforms, often faster and more personally than legacy outlets can. SciLine wanted to understand this new landscape, how creators actually work, what they need, and how a nonprofit like SciLine could best support high-quality science communication in a creator-driven world.
Supporting creators sounds straightforward until you look closely at how differently they operate from the newsrooms most science organizations are built to serve. Creators are solo operators or tiny teams. They live on platforms, not in inboxes. They make fast decisions driven by what a platform's algorithm rewards this month, and they carry real economic pressure that shapes every choice about what to publish.
That economic pressure turned out to be the deepest structural barrier. Educational and science content simply doesn't monetize the way lifestyle content does, so even passionate science communicators end up subsidizing their educational work with unrelated brand partnerships in fashion, food, or beauty. On top of that, creators are flooded with requests from organizations wanting free participation in webinars and promotion, asks that compete directly with the paid work that keeps them afloat. An organization that shows up expecting unpaid labor, however good its mission, gets tuned out.
The friction didn't stop at economics. Creators told us that expert access only helps if the expert is media-ready; a scientist who isn't comfortable on camera can waste hours of a creator's time and produce nothing usable. And generic, pre-made assets face real adoption barriers, because creators have invested heavily in distinctive personal brands and won't paste in graphics that clash with their look or, worse, make them look coordinated with everyone else using the same file. SciLine's challenge was to design support that fits all of this rather than fighting it, and to be willing to tell SciLine that the most-requested solution might not be the right one.

We listened before we prescribed.
Rather than start from assumptions about what creators need, we ran in-depth, semi-structured interviews alongside a pre-survey with creators and newsroom professionals, chosen to span a deliberately diverse range: different platforms, content types, audience sizes, and professional backgrounds, from academically trained scientists to journalism-schooled creators to fully independent operators. Each conversation covered how they actually work, from content workflows and fact-checking practices to the resources they rely on and the pain points that slow them down.
We validated what people said against what they do.
Interviews tell you what creators believe about their own process; they don't always tell you what's true. So we analyzed the transcripts through thematic coding and then triangulated those findings against creators' actual behavior on their live platforms, checking stated preferences against real posting patterns, formats, and choices. That extra step is what separated durable insight from anecdote, and it let us build recommendations on how creators genuinely operate rather than how they describe themselves.
We translated insight into a program, not a wish list.
The research surfaced a real tension. The single most-requested resource, a searchable library of professional graphics, was also one of the least sustainable things SciLine could build, demanding dedicated design staff, constant updating as data and news cycles shift, and technical infrastructure to host and search it all. Handing SciLine that as a recommendation would have been easy and wrong. Instead, we designed a primary recommendation that hits the same underlying goals through a model SciLine could actually run.
We began by mapping what the research consistently surfaced across every conversation: the economics that force science creators to subsidize their mission with lifestyle work; the near-universal hunger for professional-quality, platform-optimized visuals; the need for experts who are media-ready, not just credentialed; the fatigue with unpaid organizational outreach; and the importance of resources that creators can customize to protect their own brand and authenticity. These themes became the design brief.
From there we built the central recommendation: a SciLine Creator-in-Residence program, a funded fellowship that turns one-off resource provision into sustained, reciprocal engagement. We designed it end to end, from cohort size and a flat stipend structure to fellowship benefits, content and attendance requirements, selection criteria, an annual in-person convening, and a full first-year budget and timeline.
Every element traced back to a finding. The stipend acknowledges the economic reality without pretending to compete with brand deals, because the research showed the real draw is professional development, expert access, and peer community, not the honorarium. A flat rate across all fellows avoids making creators feel ranked and reflects that smaller creators often deliver outsized engagement. Custom graphic requests and editable templates are folded in as a fellowship benefit, which answers the intense demand for visuals without committing SciLine to building and maintaining a full public database. And because the research showed creators discover and trust resources through peers rather than institutional accounts, the fellows themselves become SciLine's most credible ambassadors, extending its reach far more naturally than an organizational social presence ever could.

Around that flagship, we delivered a set of supporting recommendations calibrated to SciLine's real capacity: a lighter-touch visual-asset approach built on evergreen, customizable templates rather than a live database; a simplified, topic-based email system modeled on best-in-class opt-in flows so creators get only the alerts that match their beat; and a clear-eyed assessment of which larger initiatives, like a full newsroom consortium, to note but deprioritize. The through-line was feasibility: every recommendation was sized to what SciLine could sustainably run while building on its existing strengths in trusted experts and fact-based resources.
Because this engagement delivered the research and strategy that guide SciLine's creator work, the measures reflect the depth of the research and the concreteness of what we delivered.
The most valuable thing research can do is tell a client something they didn't expect to hear. Going in, the obvious answer was to build the resource creators asked for most. What the research showed was that the resource everyone wanted was the one SciLine could least sustain, and that the deeper need underneath it, sustained and reciprocal engagement that respects how creators actually work, could be met far more effectively another way.
This engagement worked because we treated creators as partners to understand rather than an audience to broadcast at, and because we were willing to steer SciLine toward the harder-won right answer instead of the easy popular one. The result wasn't just a set of findings. It was a fundable, buildable program grounded in how science communication actually happens today.
